How to make your flashcards
- Pick a palette. Black & white has the highest contrast. Add red from around 3 months.
- Tick your patterns. Seventeen designs, from checkerboards and bullseyes to smiley faces and big eyes.
- Choose cards per page. One big card, 2×2 or 2×3 for cutting out.
- Download the PDF and print on card stock (200–250 gsm). Use the cut lines to trim.
Using high-contrast cards
- Hold a card about 20–30 cm (8–12 in) from baby’s face, where newborns focus best.
- Show one card at a time for a minute or two, then slowly move it side to side.
- Short sessions when baby is calm and alert work best. Stop if baby looks away or fusses.
- Prop cards beside the cot or on the floor for tummy time.
These cards are a fun play activity, not medical advice. Ask your health visitor or paediatrician if you have questions about your baby’s vision.
Frequently asked questions
Is it free?

Why black and white?
Newborns see strong contrast more easily than subtle colours, so bold shapes are easier for them to look at.
Can I laminate them?
