First birthday invitation wording: 60+ ideas
One whole year! A first birthday party is usually small: family, a few friends, cake and a lot of photos. The invitation only needs a cheerful top line and the party details. Below are wording ideas in different moods, RSVP and gift notes, a checklist of what to include and when to send it. Pick a line, change it to fit your family, and turn it into a free printable invitation in a few minutes.
Tap a design to open it with your own details. Type the name, choose the age and fill in the party details; the Give me an idea button next to the top line and the RSVP line suggests more wording.
What to include
- The child's name and that they are turning one.
- Date and time, with an end time if the party is short (many first birthdays last two hours, around nap time).
- Place and address. For a party at home, the street is enough for guests who know you; add parking tips if needed.
- How to reply: a name, a phone number and a date.
- Optional notes: a theme, "no gifts, please", "kids welcome" or what to wear.
If you share the invitation in a big group chat or online, leave out your home address and send it to guests privately.

Thank-you notes after the party
In the same maker, choose Thank-you card for a matching note. A few lines:
- "Thank you for coming to my first birthday and for the lovely gift!"
- "Thank you for celebrating our little one's first year with us."
- "The book is already a favorite. Thank you for making my day so special."
For more ideas, the Give me an idea button in the thank-you card suggests lines by who it is for and the style you like.
When to send
- 3 to 4 weeks before the party is right for most first birthdays.
- 6 to 8 weeks before if family needs to travel; send a save-the-date first.
- Print at home: choose Print at home (PDF) on card stock (200 to 250 gsm). A 5×7 in invitation fits a standard envelope.
- Send by phone: choose Picture (PNG) and share it in WhatsApp or messages.
More on paper and sizes in our printing tips. Want a "then and now" poster for the party? Choose Birthday poster in the same maker and add the birth weight and length next to today's.
Questions
What do you write on a first birthday invitation?
A cheerful top line, the child's name and age, the date and time, the place and how to reply. Add a theme or a gift note if you like. Two or three lines plus the details are enough.
How far in advance should you send first birthday invitations?
Three to four weeks before the party. If guests need to travel, send them six to eight weeks ahead or send a save-the-date first.
How do you say no gifts on a birthday invitation?
Keep it short and warm, for example "No gifts, please. Your presence is our present." Put it in the RSVP line so it does not take over the card.
Are the invitations free?
Yes. Make and download as many as you like, with no sign-up. Everything runs in your browser, so your photos stay on your device.
Can I add a photo?
Yes. Add a photo in the Photo section of the maker; a smiling close-up works best.
