How to print your folded card

  1. Open the PDF and choose Print. Paper: A4.
  2. Turn on two-sided printing. On most printers: Landscape + flip on long edge, or Portrait + flip on short edge. Printers differ, so test once on plain paper: if the inside is upside down when you open the card, switch to the other flip.
  3. Set the size to Actual size / 100%, not “Fit” (Fit shrinks the card slightly).
  4. Fold along the small marks at the top and bottom edge, design facing out.

No two-sided printing? Print page 1, put the sheet back in the tray (test once on plain paper which way up it goes), then print page 2. Best paper: 200–250 gsm card stock.

How to make your flashcards

  1. Pick a palette. Black & white has the highest contrast. Add red from around 3 months.
  2. Check your patterns. 37 designs, from checkerboards, bullseyes and spirals to simple shapes like a teddy face, a car, a fish and a butterfly. Tick Select all, or tap Random pick for a fresh mix.
  3. Choose cards per page and how many pages. One big card, or 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 12 to cut out, on up to 10 pages. Your picks repeat to fill the pages, or press Random pick for a new mix.
  4. Download the PDF and print on card stock (200–250 gsm). Use the cut lines to trim.

Using high-contrast cards

These cards are a fun play activity, not medical advice. Ask your health visitor or paediatrician if you have questions about your baby’s vision.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Make and print as many sets as you like.

Why black and white?

Newborns see strong contrast more easily than subtle colors, so bold shapes are easier for them to look at.

Can I laminate them?

Yes. Laminate after cutting or print on thick card stock to keep them sturdy.
