How to make your flashcards
- Pick a palette. Black & white has the highest contrast. Add red from around 3 months.
- Check your patterns. 37 designs, from checkerboards, bullseyes and spirals to simple shapes like a teddy face, a car, a fish and a butterfly. Tick Select all, or tap Random pick for a fresh mix.
- Choose cards per page and how many pages. One big card, or 2, 4, 6, 8, 9 or 12 to cut out, on up to 10 pages. Your picks repeat to fill the pages, or press Random pick for a new mix.
- Download the PDF and print on card stock (200–250 gsm). Use the cut lines to trim.
Using high-contrast cards
- Hold a card about 20–30 cm (8–12 in) from baby’s face, where newborns focus best.
- Show one card at a time for a minute or two, then slowly move it side to side.
- Short sessions when baby is calm and alert work best. Stop if baby looks away or fusses.
- Prop cards beside the crib or on the floor for tummy time.
These cards are a fun play activity, not medical advice. Ask your health visitor or paediatrician if you have questions about your baby’s vision.
